Lower Primary
The major goals of the British-Nigeria Primary Education are achieving basic literacy and numeracy amongst all pupils, as well as establishing foundations in science, mathematics and other subjects.
This stage comprises three groups:
Year 1 (5 – 6 years), Year 2 (6 – 7 years) and Year 3 (7 – 8 years).
Year 1 (5 – 6 years)
Our curriculum for Year 1 follows essential learning areas as adapted from the British–Nigerian National Curriculum such as Communication, Languages and Literacy; Mathematical Understanding; Computing; Science and Technological Understanding; Human, Social and Environmental Understanding; Physical Health Education. Arts and Music are fully taught as part of the School Co-curriculum/Club activities. Apart from English, other languages taught at in Year 1 include Arabic and French. Also, religious studies like CRK/IRK are taught.
During Year 1, we build on work from the Reception, making sure that pupils can sound and blend unfamiliar printed words, words quickly and accurately using the phonic knowledge and skills that they have already learnt throughout the Early Years Foundation Stage.
At Noble Brains Academy, we understand that mathematics is a creative and highly inter-connected discipline essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment.
In accordance with the British–Nigerian curriculum, we emphasise the importance of a high-quality mathematics education. We develop pupils' mathematical competence in number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, measurement, geometry (properties of shapes), geometry (position and direction).
We affirm that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Our pupils are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Pupils are taught to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena.
Year 2 (6 – 7 years)
By the beginning of Year 2, we ensure pupils are able to read all common graphemes; and unfamiliar words containing graphemes, accurately and without undue hesitation, by sounding them out in books that are matched closely to each pupil's level of word reading knowledge. We support our pupils to increase their fluency by being able to read words easily and automatically.
During year 2, we intensify focus on establishing pupils' accurate and speedy word reading skills. We develop pupils' listening skills to discuss a wide range of stories, poems, plays and information books. They are taught more spelling patterns and rules, and begin to apply those in their writing. They will learn the possessive apostrophe, homophones, and near-homophones and suffixes.
By the end of Year 2, pupils are being encouraged to work more independently. Pupils at this stage are continuously supported to improve their ability to coordinate movement, as their language/speech becomes increasingly complex and grammatically correct.
We focus on developing our pupils' mathematical skills and competence in number and place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, geometry (properties of shapes), geometry (position and direction), measurement, and statistics. This includes improved knowledge in reading and spelling mathematical vocabulary.
We inspire pupils to use creativity and imagination in designing and making products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others' needs, wants and values. Pupils are taught to draw knowledge from disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
Year 3 (7 – 8 years)
By the beginning of Year 3, we ensure pupils are able to read books written at an age-appropriate interest level accurately and at a speed that is sufficient for them to focus on understanding what they read. Teaching is directed towards developing their vocabulary and the breadth and depth of their reading, making sure that they become independent, fluent, and enthusiastic readers who read widely and frequently.
Mathematics teaching at this stage is focused at ensuring that pupils become increasingly fluent with whole numbers and the four operations, including number facts and the concept of place value. Pupils are helped to develop efficient written and mental methods and perform calculations accurately with increasingly large whole numbers.
In science, pupils are encouraged to ask questions about what they observe and make some decisions about which types of scientific enquiry are likely to be the best ways of answering them. The areas of learning include plants, animals (including humans), rocks, lights, forces and magnets.
We help pupils investigate, record and present the results of their findings using different types of scientific enquiry.
We promote problem solving skills and confidence with number through practical activities and real-life applications.
We continue to develop global awareness and responsibility through our integrated curriculum and value-based learning.
